Project's objective
Study of the dynamics of the area of the Khrabrovo solid waste landfill based on satellite images WorldView-2
Work description
The Khrabrovo solid waste landfill is located in the west of the Moscow region on the territory of the Mozhaisk urban district.
To assess the dynamics of the landfill area, it was decided to use WorldView-2 satellite images in the visible range for July 2016, for May and October 2019. To improve the accuracy of calculating the area change for all the images obtained, an orthorectification procedure was performed using RPC, as well as the registration of images for July 2016 and May 2019 to the image for October 2019. Then, the solid waste landfill was digitized in each of the images. The area occupied by the landfill was calculated for each of the periods. Figure 1 shows the dynamics of changes in the area of the Khrabrovo landfill from 2016 to 2019.
Pic.1. Change in the area of the Khrabrovo solid waste landfill in 2016-2019
From July 2016 to May 2019, the landfill area increased by 32.7 thousand m2, or 2.68 times. At the same time, from May to October 2019, the area of the solid waste landfill increased by 59.91 thousand m2, or 2.15 times. However, if we bring the growth rates to a common denominator, for example, to thousand m2/month, then in 2019 the average growth was 11.98 thousand m2/month, and between 2016 and 2019 the average growth was 0.96 thousand m2/month. Most likely, the rapid growth in 2019 is associated with the garbage crisis in Russia in 2017-2019. due to which part of the solid waste landfills, especially in the Moscow region, was closed, therefore, the load on the existing landfills has increased greatly.
